Who are Citizen Lobbyists?
Just normal folks dragged into the bullying movement involuntarily by their bully at work. For them politics is not a job. They are different from paid, professional lobbyists who do it for a living. The professionals deliver cash for re-election campaigns anticipating future access and favorable treatment.
Citizen Lobbyists have more passion about the topic since it influences their lives so relentlessly AND they have the power of right on their side. (If only right made might!) They do not deal in contributions to politicians, however. They must influence elected officials to do the right thing based on the merits of the argument and the power of their personal, anecdotal story.
To date, all state legislators who have introduced the 'Healthy Workplace' Bill have done so at the urging of a persuasive constituent who touched a nerve and challenged them to take a stand against Workplace Bullying. This means that despite a national cynicism about politicians (confirmed by public polls), results from positive civic action is not dead. You gotta believe. (Of course, passing the bill will take more effort than simply getting it introduced.) Even with no money, you CAN gain access. Legislators work for you.
The Lobbyist's Weapons
Your personal st ory shared face-to-face with the politician, coupled with the background information we provide elsewhere, makes the most compelling argument for having a law. Stories alone will be discounted as whining. Research statistics without tales from the trenches are devoid of emotion, rather pallid. But presented together, they are compelling.
After you register in the WBI-LC Citizen Lobbyist database (shared only with WBI-LC designated State Coordinators working locally for HWB passage into law), you will have access to lots of information to support your work with local state Representatives and Senators.
